Dominica – Part 2 – A Bit About Titou Gorge

I have been looking at activities to do when we get to Dominica. To those of you that might not have read my previous blog, it’s where my Mama was born. The rest of us, (Pops me and Dan) have never been.

Now as you may know from the Hurricane Ian update, we weren’t able to do many water activities as it was too dangerous. However we haven’t been defeated and will get back to Dominica in the future and do SCUBA elsewhere.

Pops is from Barbados so I am very spoiled. Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t tired of Barbados! But we are excited to visit a country that 3/4 have never been to.

Now those who know me, can tell you that the only time I am close to organised is when I have a holiday coming up. Not the packing, the booking, the getting there, (thank you wonderful Daniel) but the activities. “Ooh she sounds fun” you might say or think sarcastically (I’m great fun at parties) and not be interested in anything else I have to say. But if you persevere, I can give you a tip that works for us each time whether you are going on a group holiday or solo (except for one time in Barcelona when I was 20).

I usually look up 3 websites (links are always at the end of the article): Lonely Planet,Trip Advisor and the country or areas official tourist website. Lonely Planet is brilliant because it gives lists, articles and maps for the place you want to visit from tourist spots to places off the beaten path. Trip Advisor is well known and in the case of Dominica, I have been looking at the Discover Dominica Authority website.

In case you think you have never seen any part of Dominica, you might be surprised to find out that you have. Some scenes from Pirate’s of the Caribbean were filmed there. The cage Johnny Depp was in as he drops down among the vines is Titou Gorge.

My family and other travellers that have been to Dominica have all recommended this peaceful place as somewhere to visit when you go to the island.

Facts and Tips about Titou Gorge

Facts and Tips about Titou Gorge

  • Titou means “little hole” which opens up into an eerie looking place from a fairy tale.
  • Although tours are available, the websites say you can visit without one, you just need to purchase a ticket to the area from one of the local shops or stands.
  • The entrance is at the base of a waterfall (getting more excited with every word).
  •  Ceiling of the gorge was made by interlocking trees, the walls by molten lava cooling and splitting apart
  • There is a hot spring by the entrance of the gorge
  • Ask locals or your tour guide about the recent rainfall as once you are in the gorge itself the water can get very deep especially after the tropical rainfall. The current can get strong so if you are not a confident swimmer that may cause some concern *

This is one ofwo things I want to do above all other activities in Dominica along with my first SCUBA dive.
