Celebrate the Wins!

It’s been a busy few days. You might hear about that later. I went to Liverpool with the ladies of Jim’s family.

But back to last Thursday…

In uni we had a workshop run by the artist Tom Wolfe. He was interesting, fun and informative. High praise from someone who is rubbish at listening as I get easily distracted.

We learned about creative thinking processes and idea making. I am one of those people who comes up with a fully fledged idea pretty much instantly but I need to ‘trust the process’ more. It was great to hear that I have good creative instincts but I definitely need to work on other ways of thinking and idea generating.

Tom gave us word association exercises using words such as ‘pain’ and ‘debt’. We then had to draw mini illustrations that depict that word or scenario using the words and concepts we wrote.

We were then given 5 articles and asked to choose one to illustrate. I chose an article about space debris (space junk) almost colliding. (Link below).

I sketched some concepts that were well received and when the piece is finished I will post them.

What I realised is that I’m definitely starting to be proud of the work I produce. It has only taken 41 years! But that’s okay, because I’m getting there. Better late than never really does apply. If I had tried to do this when I was younger, I had the way but definitely not the will. No motivation. Over 20 years later and I am where I am meant to be. It is nice to have your life sorted by 30 or 40 but for some of us, i.e. me it has taken a little longer but I am happy to be here in the now. So if you are reading this and have imposter syndrome, or ‘I am too old’ syndrome, I get it but I was wrong.

And now onto food with Jim…

That day he met me for lunch and took me to Chopstix in Swansea. We had never been before. The food looked good. I had soy chicken and coconut curry on what the Welsh call Half and Half (rice and chips or rice and noodles. In our case rice and noodles). The food is in Bain Maries and you choose what you want from the menu. Jim had half and half rice and noodles only with firecracker chicken and sweet ‘n’ sour chicken. Jim called it “mediocre and I agreed”. Service was good but the food was just okay. It says the food is fresh but it didn’t taste like it was. We think there are plenty of places that we want to go to before we would think about going back. It’s a maybe from Jim.

I really did like the graphics Chopstix uses however. From an illustrative point of view it’s really cool and leans into the kawaii style. I created my own version. You can compare below.

Stay golden peeps
